“Climate Policy and the Green Paradox”
If for political or other reasons a steeply rising carbon tax is not implemented and governments instead choose to subsidize alternative renewable energy (e.g., solar or wind), this may be counterproductive as it merely encourages owners to oil wells to pump faster. This paradox is a useful basis for discussing the tradeoffs and paradoxes underlying current climate policies and the role for industry. For example, what are the merits (if there are any) of raising pollution taxes and using the proceeds to cut taxes on labor and cut corporation taxes. Ambitious climate policies are also frustrated by their adverse income consequences for the poorest on our planet. It may be better form a climate perspective to encourage owners of oil wells to keep more of their reserves in situ.
18.30 – 22.30 | A toast to five years STX followed by drinks, bites & music
